2026 Scholarship Application

COLA is pleased to offer $2,000 scholarships to aid students currently pursuing a degree in the field ofMedical Laboratory Science within an accredited program. This scholarship was formed in 2012 to foster awareness of careers in the medical laboratory and to support the individuals who will become the future of the industry.

At the heart of COLA’s mission, there is one objective: to enhance patient safety. COLA supports that objective through exciting opportunities to celebrate its successes, engage in professional development and community reinforcing activities as well as give back efforts. COLA continues to increase awareness about the medical laboratory sciences professions through the GiveBack365 Scholarship Program.

Applicants must meet the following criteria.

  • Be actively enrolled and in good standing within a Medical Laboratory Science, Cytology or Histotechnology program at an accredited institution in the US or US territories. (Certification programs accepted)
  • Have successfully completed one semester in their program
  • Be seeking an associate, baccalaureate, certificate or master’s degree

 Please include in your application packet:

  • Completed signed application form
  • An unofficial school transcript indicating your enrollment in a laboratory science
  • A letter of recommendation from someone that knows you in an academic, work or professional capacity.
  • Short answer responses
  • An essay of approximately 500 words on the following topic:

Should artificial intelligence be integrated into laboratory environments, or does it pose more risks than benefits to those working in the laboratories, to providers and stakeholders who utilize laboratory results? Defend your position using evidence, ethical considerations and real-world examples.

Please submit the completed application and all supporting materials via email to scholarships@cola.org no later than November 1, 2026.

The scholarship selection committee will verify all eligibility requirements are met and group applications by degree. A team of volunteer COLA staff members will evaluate the letter of recommendation, short answer questions and essay. Scores are compiled for each candidate. The applicants receiving the highest scores in each degree category are awarded scholarships. Winners will be notified by email on or before January 4, 2027.

COLA’s Board of Directors consists of representatives from three founding member organizations: the American Medical Association (AMA), American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) and the American College of Physicians (ACP).

The scholarship will be awarded on an objective and nondiscriminatory basis based on the information received from the candidate as well as the requested letter of recommendation.  All scholarship funds must be used for educational expenses for students actively enrolled and in good standing in a Medical Laboratory Science or Medical Laboratory Technology Program at an accredited university or an accredited institution of higher learning.  Recipients are selected on the basis of academic merit and potential contribution to the field of laboratory medicine.  Scholarships may not be awarded to any Director, Officer or employee of COLA Inc. or its subsidiaries, members of the Selection Committee, certain government employees, donors or their respective family members.
